This Job Opportunity Announcement will be used to fill a Nursing Assistant, GS-0621-3/4/5 position in Medical/Surgical Unit at the VA in Oklahoma City. This is an open continuous announcement and will close when all positions are filled or September 30, 2022 Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. BASIC REQUIREMENTS Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English Education or Training. One year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3. GRADE REQUIREMENTS GS-3 Experience and Education None beyond the basic requirements. GS-4 Experience. One year of specialized experience as a [NA] or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments; OR, Education. Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians; Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents. 2. Ability to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner. 3. Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc. 4. Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals.?????? GS-5 Experience. One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs. OR, Education. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree. AND Demonstrated KSAs 1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse. 2. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new [NAs] by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting. 3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. Care includes assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, eating and mobility. Operates a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, wheelchairs, stretchers, vital sign machines, bladder scanners, lifts and oxygen. Assists with procedures using proper technique. Transports patients using safe technique. Completes thorough, timely and accurate documentation of care provided. Must be able to recognize and react to acute changes or emergent patient conditions such as bleeding, abnormal vital signs and behavior crisis. If assigned to the acute medical unit, will be required to pass test for cardiac rhythms and watch monitors. Monitor watching will require recognition of alarms for serious or life threatening rhythms and immediate notification of the Registered Nurse who is responsible for assessment and intervention. Duties include but not limited to: Assists in the care and treatment of patients receiving medical, surgical, psychiatric, or outpatient treatment. Observes and reports obvious changes in patient behavior, attitude, and appearance. Assists in the performance of diagnostic/assessment examinations by performing duties (such as the taking, recording, monitoring, and reporting of vital signs, patient height and weight, and patient concerns/symptoms) and preparing and positioning the patient. Performs simple treatment procedures such as changing dressings/bandages; applying or removing binders, arm slings, or applying hot and cold packs. Performs a wide variety of duties aimed at increasing patients' comfort and health status. Performs basic personal care that requires knowledge of standardized procedures such as performance of bathing, toileting, activities of daily living, active/passive range-of-motion activities, assisting with eating/drinking, transporting patients, and bed making. Applies protective patient safety devices. Provides personal comfort items, such as drinking water, to patients, and assures the patient's environment is safe, clean and tidy. Explains to patients and family members the necessity of procedures for proper health care. Assists with general health education, such as reminding patients/family/care providers of importance of skin care, position changes, patient safety, adhering to medication/dietary regimen. Enters specific information into the patient's electronic record using appropriate formats, medical terminology, and templates. This information must be entered in a complete, confidential, and professional manner to insure information on the patient is shared with other VA staff. This information is to be reviewed on a regular basis. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with employees, volunteers, consumers and stakeholders within the VA and outside community agencies. Attendance of all appropriate staff meetings (interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, other committees as appropriate, etc.) is necessary.
