| The VA St. Louis Health Care System is recruiting for an Occupational Therapist (Low Vision Clinical Specialist) in the Occupational Therapy Department within the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service of the Extended Care and Rehabilitation Service. The incumbent will provide professional Occupational Therapy services to any/all program areas that are covered by the Rehabilitation Services, including acute care, rehabilitation, long term care, home care, inpatient and outpatient settings. Duties include, but are not limited to: Serves as a consultant for all health care providers regarding Low Vision Occupational Therapy and rehabilitation. Educates/orients students, nurses and other clinical staff regarding OT in general and specifically, as it relates to Low Vision mgmt. Mentors therapy staff. Participates as a valuable member of the interdisciplinary Low Vision team. Guides the work of this team regarding goal planning and discharge planning needs. Reviews, and updates, Low Vision protocols, policy and programs, at the VASTLHCS. Provides evaluations and treatments that are in alignment with up to date clinical practice guidelines and treatment for Low Vision, that are evidence based. Provides a minimum of one in-service education program per year to the OT department. Plans, implements and reports on performance improvement activities related to Low Vision Occupational Therapy services. Serves as subject matter expert for Visual Impairment modalities and equipment, as it relates to Low Vision management. Involves the patient, family/significant other, and medical team in treatment planning and goal setting through ongoing communication. Plans and carries out the full range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities where therapeutic objectives are complex, and procedures involved require the application of specialized skills and knowledge in the area of low vision and OT. Demonstrates independent problem-solving skills that allow for frequent modification of treatment plans in response to subtle, but significant changes in the condition of the patient. Assesses for and requests prosthetic/orthotic equipment as needed and can make modifications as necessary. Makes recommendations and referral to other medical specialties/services as needs are identified during ongoing assessment of this complex patient population. Assists in the scheduling of patients according to the Occupational Therapy treatment plan while coordinating with the treatment plans of other disciplines within the team and facility. Maintains a flexibility of schedule to allow for unscheduled patients, patient/team consultation and mentoring. Maintains consistent and timely documentation of patient encounters in the electronic medical record in accordance with accepted OT practice, facility and Rehabilitation Service policies and procedures. Participates in regular team meetings, verbal and written communication and consultation amongst team members in order to guide and evaluate the work of the multi-disciplinary program. Assists in the care of patients other than those of the specialized area low vision rehab as caseload permits, or as the needs of the department dictate. Contributor to the Major Medical Equipment committee, in area of certified low vision rehabilitation. Compiles and submits statistical data, reports and quality assurance findings to document program effectiveness, caseload, and attendance. Assists in the maintenance of the clinic and exhibits good safety practices following proper safety policies and procedures per VA, Joint Commission, CARF, OSHA, etc. for infection control, equipment etc. Participates in quality assurance projects and completes reports as required on patient treatment. Participates in quarterly occupational therapy peer review process. Participates in or coordinates program development for special programs within the Occupational therapy department. Aware of and adheres to the department/service/facility's values, mission, rules, policies and procedures and the American Occupational Therapy Association Standards of Practice and Standards of Ethics to ensure quality patient care. Aware of safety concerns, regulations, policies and procedures, and employs appropriate safety practices. Works effectively to ensure that productivity is maintained at the established level for the assigned programs. Attends/participates IDT, as an active OT member of the low vision team. In the absence of the Supervisor, the therapist performs, any, or all duties. Serves on committees, or teams, as requested. Participates in Performance Improvement activities and peer review as requested. Maintains adequate supplies, materials, and equipment for anticipated treatment needs, in line with budget. Maintains current CPR certification, and any other requirements, as deemed necessary by the medical center. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., alternating weekend/holiday rotation Duty Station: The duty station is at the Jefferson Barracks primary, however cover at any PMR service location as needed.
